But first things first: Thanksgiving Day calls to the troops deployed overseas in Afghanistan and Iraq. That morning, President Barack Obama and wife Michelle called 10 members of the armed services – two from each branch, including the Marines and Coast Guard – wishing them a happy holiday and giving his personal thanks for their sacrifices.

Then it was down to business – a gullet-busting Thanksgiving feast that could have satisfied William Howard Taft: turkey, honey-baked ham, cornbread and oyster stuffings, greens, mac and cheese, sweet potatoes and mashed potatoes, green-bean casserole, banana cream pie, pumpkin pie, apple pie, huckleberry pie, cherry pie – and the president's favorite, sweet-potato pie.
