'In The Heights' will soon be in movie theaters.
The critically-acclaimed Broadway musical – revolving around the exciting sights and sounds of Latinos living in the Washington Heights section of New York City – is being adapted into a film version.
Today, it was announced that Universal Pictures acquired the rights to the Lin-Manuel Miranda-created theatrical tour-de-force.
"'In The Heights' is a musical rich with storyline and characters that transcend the setting in which they are cast to entertain and speak to audiences from all walks of life," Universal production chief Donna Langley said. "We are thrilled to be working with Lin-Manuel Miranda to bring this fantastic story to the big screen."
'Heights,' which became a hit on and off Broadway, won four Tony awards including Best Musical, and Best Choreography this year.
"Nearly nine years into my journey with Heights, I remain constantly humbled by all the opportunities we have been given," 28-year-old Miranda, went on to win a Tony Award for Best Actor, said. "I am thrilled to work with Universal and help bring this story to millions of people around the world."
The show's original Broadway producers Kevin McCollum, Jeffrey Seller and Jill Furman will produce the film.
