Alicia Keys (Getty)Elle magazine's Women in Music issue profiles several of the music industry's chart-dominators (Ke$ha, Hayley Williams of Paramore), indie darlings (girl band The Like) and up-and-comers (La Roux, VV Brown). It also features one eyebrow-raising comment from R&B diva Alicia Keys: "My look isn't plotted out, like, I'm going to have red hair because it's a new record. It has to be genuine, not a branding concept."

Keys' quote hit the web just a week after pop star Rihanna debuted a new bright red 'do at Madrid's Rock in Rio festival, prompting fans to wonder if Keys meant to slight the always-trendy "Umbrella" singer—who, incidentally, is this month's cover girl.

It's unlikely: Both Alicia and Rihanna count rapper Jay-Z among their professional mentors, and these quotes are usually secured months in advance. Still, it seems that Keys disapproves of the sartorial shock tactics employed by many of her fellow women in music, does it not?
