Upon being notified that your child had been found dead in the bathroom of his elementary school, the least you would expect is full disclosure about the circumstances of the tragedy, right? Well, 10-year-old Aquan Lewis was found dead, hanging from a coat hook in the bathroom of his elementary school. The Cook County medical examiner labeled Aquan Lewis' death a suicide, but the family complains that getting some information has been like pulling teeth:

Aquan Lewis, a fifth-grader at Oakton Elementary, was found unresponsive and hanging from a hook at about 3 p.m. Tuesday. He was pronounced dead Wednesday morning at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

Speaking to reporters at Evanston-Skokie School Dist. 65 headquarters at noon, police and school officials steadfastly refused to discuss even the most basic details.

After protest by the family, the investigation into Lewis' death continues.

"It's devastating," said school board member Jerome Summers. "Nobody anticipates the death of their child when they send their kid to school."

After repeated questions from parents and reporters, officials admitted that other students are being talked to about the boy's death.

Police Cmdr. Tom Guenther said they are talking to anyone who may be "germane to the investigation."

Questions about the boy being found hanging from a coat hook were largely ignored by officials, at that time.

Todd Smith, an attorney for the Lewis family said, however, "It is our understanding the boy was found hanging on a hook and (his absence) had gone unnoticed for a substantial amount of time."

Nearly 24 hours after the boy was found, neither police nor school officials could say where the boy was supposed be -- either in gym or his classroom -- at the time he was found.

I do not understand why no school official even knows where this child was supposed to be while he was in fact hanging in the bathroom. What a shocking and sad admission.
