On DVD: The Secret Life Of Bees

Released this past September, and now available on DVD and on Blu-Ray is this film based on the award-winning novel by Sue Monk Kidd, which was on the 'New York Times' best-seller list for two years -- selling over 4.7 million copies.

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, 'Bees' stars Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, Sophie Okonedo, Alicia Keys, Paul Bettany, Hilarie Burton, Nate Parker and Tristan Wilds.

Set in South Carolina in 1964, the film is the moving tale of Lily Owens (Fanning), a 14 year-old girl who is haunted by the memory of her late mother (Burton). To escape her lonely life and troubled relationship with her father (Bettany), Lily flees with Rosaleen (Hudson), her caregiver and only friend, to a South Carolina town that holds the secret to her mother's past.

Taken in by the intelligent and independent Boatwright sisters (Latifah, Okonedo and Keys), Lily finds solace in their mesmerizing world of beekeeping, honey and the Black Madonna.

Grossing a profitable $37.7 million dollars from a budget of $11 million, the film's DVD includes a director's extended cut of the film featuring never-before-seen footage, deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes featurettes cast and crew commentary and more.

The film is nominated for several NAACP Image Awards, including one for Best Picture.
