It was clearly a big Oscars night for Kathryn Bigelow. Not only did her film The Hurt Lockerwin a slew of prizes, but she also became the first woman to win a Best Director Academy Award -- and she happened to beat out her ex-husband James Cameron and his megamovieAvatar in the process. It was no small feat, but Bigelow didn't gloat at all.

James Cameron and his current wife, Suzy Amis. (Getty)"I think he's an extraordinary filmmaker. I have to say, all the nominees are phenomenal, powerful, talented filmmakers, and what an honor," Bigelow said (via Us magazine). "And for me, how humbling it was for me to be in that company, in that conversation. So I have to say, for me, it's a humbling experience."

She was asked what she'd tell her ex after the show, and her reply was, "You left me speechless."

It seems like there won't be any hard feelings the other way around, either. Before the show started, Cameron said: "She sees my films when I'm writing them and cutting them and vice versa. She saw Avatar five times at different stages and gave notes. So we're actually helping each other!"

Though Bigelow was very modest about her win, she said she hopes she won't be the only female Best Director winner for long. "I hope I'm the first of many," she said. "And, of course, I'd love to just think of myself as a filmmaker, and I long for the day when a modifier can be a moot point. But I'm ever grateful if I can inspire some young, intrepid, tenacious male or female filmmaker and have them feel that the impossible is possible and never give up on your dream."
